Nicotera, home of the Mediterranean DietThe Mediterranean diet has been subject to many types of studies worldwide, the last one which ended a few years ago has been included in the project “Olive Oil European Style" promoted by the Olive oil valorisation institute of Rome and funded by the Italian government and the European Union.
It was scientifically demonstrated that through studies and comparisons amongst diets followed by people in seven different countries to verify its benefits and faults, Nicotera, which is in the province of Vibo Valentia (Calabria) and 3 km away from Limbadi, came out as the winning one. Nicotera ‘s Diet refers to a healthy diet consisting of simple dishes, healthy ingredients with no preservatives, a diet where extra virgin olive oil is the protagonist, just like pasta, fish and vegetables. Elderly people in this district have less cardiovascular problems leading to death, basically a diet to live longer.Furthermore, the World Health Organization (Oms), recommends a healthy diet which is more similiar to the typical Mediterranean one that our grandparents used to follow during the 50s. Not only a Mediterranean Diet but also olive oil is beneficial, even the "Food and drug administration", that is the institution which regulates medicines in the States has urged the Americans to have 21 grams of olive oil a day. If the Mediterranean Diet is supported by physical activity, benefits will translate into a decrease in cardiovascular diseases like Ictus, Ischemia and less cancers to the colon.
